BOSTON LIGHT RAIL
Lechmere Loop

Lechmere, location of this photo, is beyond the downtown core -- and in fact it is out of Boston entirely, in Cambridge.  It is the furthest east of the three standard destinations for the branches from the west.   The station is old -- a survivor from the days of a much larger rail network serving the area.

Planning is in its early stages to extend the route from near here up through Somerville to Medford.  This materialized as the result of legal action in connection with the immensely expensive "Big Dig" expressway and tunneling project.  If the rail extension comes to fruition it will consign this old location to history.  And it would be the first Green Line expansion in more than half a century.

Rails execute a tight loop at the terminal.  Homes, industry, and shopping are close by.
