WASHINGTON, DC HEAVY RAIL
Metro Center

It was a hot June day in 1984 when this photo was taken at Metro Center, a very busy transfer point in the central part of the District.  A feature unique to Metro is the lighting along the edge of each platform.  A moment or two before a train approaches the bulbs blink repeatedly to alert passengers.

After years -- decades -- of discussion, planning is now well underway for a major addition to the system.  A long line will branch off from the Orange Line a bit before the West Falls Church station to reach Tysons Corner shopping districts, Dulles International Airport and other destinations in Virginia.  The route is expected to be constructed in two phases.  An 11.6-mile extension to Wiehle Ave. in Reston is projected to open in 2012.  In 2015, another 11.5 miles of the line will begin service to Dulles and beyond in Loudon Co.
