The Pavonia/Newport
station has numerous thick columns and a low, bulging ceiling. The
surroundings recall
a much older era in urban transit. The far platform in view here was not in
use when this photo was taken, but has since been reactivated for
peak-time service.
Both to the north and to the south of this station PATH tracks diverge into separate routes.
Northward, it's either to Hoboken or into the tunnel to Midtown
Manhattan; and south,
the subway turns either
toward Grove St. and Journal Square, or toward Exchange Place and
Lower Manhattan.
Thus in either direction there is much slow running with numerous sharp curves
and junctions. A front-end view provides the rider the opportunity to
see closely spaced red signals
timed to change color only if trains abide by a very slow pace in the
area. |
