From the Back Bay station one can see the outdoor
section just ahead toward downtown. The Orange Line runs adjacent to
Amtrak and "T" commuter
service at this point, and a couple of red signals show above the left
side of the train. Despite the proximity to South Station, the commuter
network has its own station at Back Bay.
The Southwest Corridor reconstruction project in the
1980s moved the Orange Line right of way beyond here off the Washington
St. Elevated and from the dense Roxbury and nearby neighborhoods.
The Southwest Corridor is shared with Amtrak's
high-speed service to New York City and beyond, and with "T" commuter
rail. The abandoned Washington St. line had been Boston's last extended stretch of
elevated service. |
