BAY AREA HEAVY RAIL
In Case of Emergency

In an area known for its earthquakes, the BART system was built with intensive safeguards in place.  A large display of emergency instructions is posted in every car.  This view was taken during the 3.6 mile run under San Francisco Bay.

After the Loma Prieta earthquake of 1989, BART provided vital service during the period that the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge was shut down for emergency repairs.
