BAY AREA HEAVY RAIL
Dreary Afternoon

It was a dreary December day when this photo was taken.  The scene is at MacArthur in Oakland.  One can barely see the famous tower on the campus of the University of California at Berkeley in the background.

Just beyond the platform's end, one one can also see a bit of the switch that leads to the tunnel -- top of which is barely visible -- that carries the Pittsburg/Bay Point line away from the Richmond line.  After one further station on its own that line will head into the three and one half mile Berkeley Hills Tunnel for a quick run to Orinda, and beyond.  Nearby freeway traffic in its own tunnels is often extremely congested.
