BALTIMORE HEAVY RAIL
A Single Line in Maryland

The Maryland Transit Administration operates the single heavy rail line, called the Metro Subway, in the Baltimore area.  The initial segment was opened in the early 1980s.  With further extensions the route is now over fifteen miles long, and runs from Johns Hopkins Hospital just east of downtown Baltimore to Owings Mills in western Baltimore County.

In this photo an outbound train with its striking blue front slows to enter the last stop.  The Metro Subway tracks are in the middle of the Northwest Expressway here, and the station this run is arriving from is three or four miles away.
