Resting above a U.S.A. road map on the reverse of the
Sinclair New York map is a striking ad for
H-C Sinclair
Gasoline. The image of the steam engine being raised
in
the city is powerful and eye-catching; the advertising
copy -- well, they don't write advertisements like that
any more.
The white-lettered, round red and green H-C
Sinclair logo shown here was used as the main station sign for this
once-major oil company until the
late fifties. I remember riding a Toledo city bus home from
school one day, likely in 1960, watching with sheer fascination as the old
sign came down and the more modern image with the dinosaur
beneath the name went up.
